The French Mastiff is a big tough character with a large head powerful muzzle and for a mastiff an athletic body. - - - -In the middle of the 19th these ancient dogues were hardly renowned out side the region of Aquitaine. They were used for hunting large animals such as boar, for fighting (often codified), for the guarding houses of cattle and in the service of butchers. - - - - Careful breeding has softened the old agressive nature and he is now a tolerant, affectionate loyal dog. The coat is fine, short and soft
Colour is all shades of fawn and isabele

In the UK the Dogue de Bordeaux is shown under breed classes at a few shows, or Any Variety Not Seperately Classified - A.V.N.S.C. This can be AVNSC Working, or AVNSC Working/Utility/Toy or any other combination of other groups!
They do NOT have Championship Status under KC Rules.

In Ireland, they have their own rules and these are the same as the F.C.I. - CAC and CACIB can be won here. At the moment GB residents, must register with the Irish Kennel Club to compete.
F.C.I. registered breeds should be able to show there, when quarantine is lifted in 2000.
