An alert bold proud an tough dog of medium size, elegant yet powerfully built. The coat is short, hard smooth and easily groomed. Tail is still often docked.
Colours are black, brown, fawn (Isabella) or blue with well defined rust red markings. White is seen.

In Eire the are shown under FCI Rules and have Cac and Cacib and Green Stars.
White dogs have been imported lately to UK, it is unknown whether this colour will ba accepted by the KC or breed clubs.

Problems

DCM / Dilated Cardiomyopathy - advise testing on a yearly basis so that early problems can be detected and helped. No genetic test yet available
CVI / Cervical Vertebral Instability / Wobblers - misalignment of cervical vertebrae - no genetic test
HD = Hip Dysplasia problem is low at - average 10 total (1999).
vWD / Von Willebrands Disease - abnormalities in blood-clotting system. A genetic test has been developed in the last few years.
