The Maremma is still used as a working flock guard in Italy. This is a large, strongly built dog with a very strong guarding instinct, and high intelligence. He is not a dog for the novice handler. Loyal and affectionate with family but reserved and suspicious of strangers so need plenty of socialisation as youngsters. The abundant topcoat is long and harsh in texture. The undercoat is thick.
Colour is all white, a little shading of ivory or pale fawn allowed. Pigment is black.
