The Tosa is a modern breed developed between 1868 and 1912 by crossing the 'Kochi' ( a local Japanese breed), the Bull terrier, the Bulldog, the Great Dane and the St Bernard. Originally used as a combat dog he is now used as a guard dog, watchdog and bodyguard as well as a companion, he is friendly with the family but suspicious of strangers. He is a sturdy, solid dog with a mastiff look. In temperament he can be agressive, is always courageous, sometimes threatening but nonetheless, wise, obedient and ready to accept good training. Eyes are reddish brown, small but have a penetrating expression. Ears are thin, falling along the cheeks, Neck is muscular with a dewlap. Tail reaches to the hock. The coat is very short, strong and dense.
Colour is usually red but white with red marking, or red marking on other background colours are acceptable.
