This, the largest of the Spaniels, should be compact and strongly built. He has a steady temperament, initially aloof but affectionate with a sense of humour. He is an adaptable gundog excelling at wild-fowling. His coat is a feature of the breed, oily, hanging in dense tight ringlets, the face and throat are smooth in a 'V'. The undocked tail is bare or smooth towards the end.
Colours is rich dark liver with a 'purplish tint.
