Small and sturdy with a chrysanthemum-like face, large eyes and an arrogant air. Rather independent but needs companionship. The long, dense coat is soft and flowing. Hair should be tied up off the face.

This breed has Kennel Club Challenge Certificates at most Championship Shows.

In the UK presentation of the top-knot differs from Europe, and the shaving of the anal area, and the underside of the root of the tail, arguably in the interest of hygiene. Also the fashon of 'lightning the wieght off tails' which otherwise might be carried too low or flat. Trimmimg the feet is also practiced here.
