The Shetland is said to be descended from (rough)collies brought to the islands and crossed with the yakkin, a small island dog now no longer recognised, but by 1700 the breed was completely developed. It has been described as 'an excellent collie seen through reverse binoculars' And to a certain extent this still fits the breed today. This is a livelydog and affectionate with the family. He is intelligent and capable of hard work though sometimes lacks confidence at a new task. Head is conical, eyes almond-shaped, ears semierect. The tail should reach the hock in repose. It's coat is rough with a soft undercoat; it is abundant, especially at the neck.
Colours are tricolours (black,bright chestnut and white) fawn, blue merle black and white.
