A popular family dog the cocker is small, compact and sturdy. There is a marked difference in the working and show type, both make good pets and the former tireless gundogs. The name came from the retrieving of Woodcock. On the show variety the coat is long and silky and can be various colours including solid red or golden, black black and tan, blue roan, tricolour, black and white, orange and white, liver and white
